President Obama Says Mideast Peace 'Really Hard Problem'

Posted: Updated:

President Barack Obama says he's certain he could have done things differently when it comes to the Mideast.

But he says bringing peace to the region is "a really hard problem" to solve -- one that's lingered for more than 60 years.

Obama also suggests that failure to reach an agreement in his first term between Israelis and Palestinians doesn't mean that he "screwed up somehow."

Obama says all sides have deep interests and internal politics to deal with, just as he does back home.

Obama spoke at a news conference in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Obama arrived Wednesday on his first presidential visit to Israel.

Meanwhile, President Obama says he's deeply skeptical of claims by Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime that rebel forces have used chemical weapons.

Both the Assad regime and Syrian rebels have accused each other of using chemical weapons in an attack on Tuesday.

Obama says the U.S. is investigating whether any chemical weapons were used. He says that would be a game-changer that would cross a red line for the United States.

Obama says the U.S. policy not to intervene militarily or arm Syrian rebels is based on his desire to solve the problem as a global community.

Obama's remarks came at a joint press conference Wednesday in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
