Forest Service officials have postponed prescribed burns in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest just west of Reno.
The intentional fires were to be set Monday in the Dog Valley area near Verdi about a mile from the Nevada-California line, but the Forest Service says it will announce prescribed burns at a later date, weather permitting.
At the time, crews intend to burn about 28 acres of forest understory. The project may take a couple of days.
District fuels specialist Steve Howell says prescribed fire is an efficient way to remove woody debris and forest litter so as to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire.
