Wells Pitches Nevada Baseball to Fourth Straight Victory

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev. -- Tyler Wells lasted 7 1/3 strong innings, a career high, to lead the University of Nevada baseball team to a 6-1 victory over Air Force on Saturday.

The Wolf Pack (13-6, 2-0) earned its fourth straight win after the victory over the Falcons (5-12, 0-2). After giving up a run in the first, Wells (4-0) found a groove as he struck out five while walking two in his career-high fourth victory of the season. Colby Blueberg appeared in relief for Wells, striking out three of the six batters he faced to preserve the win for Nevada.

Eight Nevada players had hits on the day, including Kewby Meyer who was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. With Nevada trailing the Falcons 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Meyer roped a line drive to the fence in right center field to score Ryan Teel and Jamison Rowe, and give Nevada the 2-1 lead.

Kyle Hunt had an RBI single in the fourth, while Hugo Hernandez and Brooks Klein each added an RBI in the fifth as insurance. Tommy Niebergall also scored in the seventh as a pinch runner for Hernandez to help Nevada cruise to victory.

Air Force pitcher Ben Bertelson (1-2) pitched 6 2/3 inning while taking the loss, his second of the season.

The Wolf Pack is in action again on Sunday in the finale of this three-game series with Air Force beginning at 1 p.m.
