It's St. Patrick's Day weekend and St. Patrick isn't the only saint to be honored. St. Baldrick will be honored as well with a huge mass head-shaving at the Reno Livestock Events Center Saturday. Meantime St Patrick will be honored with a parade during the annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival in Virginia City. Plus, a leprechaun chase and a leprechaun crawl too. Enjoy!

 

Friday 3/15

The Animals in Contemporary Art - Stremmel Gallery 9am-5pm

Contemporary artists Bill Braun, Bryan Christiansen, Catherine Courtenaye, Gaylen Hansen, Tom Judd, Leonard Koscianski, Ken Little, Adelaide Paul, Brad Rude, and Tom Uttech incorporates animals into their respective works; capturing the playful, yet majestic essence of the wild. Works range from oil on canvas to wood sculpture encased in leather. The show, a continuation of an exhibition in 2000, will run through March 23.

Creatures - Wilbur D. May Museum

The Wilbur D. May Museum's new exhibit Creatures is an all-ages exploration of things that were… things that are… and things that could be! Visitors will come face-to-face with amazing full-size animatronics of wooly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, dinosaurs, and sea monsters. Audiences will also explore the fact and fiction surrounding creatures like Bigfoot, Tahoe Tessie, dragons, and more. The Creatures exhibit features educational and interactive elements for kids, including a fossil dig, a glacier simulation display, and several touch stations.

Timeless Treasures Sparks Museum 11am-4pn

This colorful exhibit captures the vibrant spirit of Native American culture. A unique assemblage of artifacts loaned by the local community, the exhibit is filled with variety and includes paintings, pottery, arrowheads, cradle boards, baskets, musical instruments and much more. A series of events including a basket making workshop, Native American dancers, musical performances, and an art show are planned. Keep an eye on the Museum's website for more details.

World Series trophies at Reno Aces Ballpark noon-2pm

Aces Ballpark will host the San Francisco Giants World Series trophies. Fans will have the chance to have their photo taken with the trophies and to support their local Junior Giants Baseball League. Fans are advised to arrive early as the line will be cut off, if needed, to allow the trophies to leave at the designated time. Fans will be accomodated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Diamond Peak's Jiblet Competition 9 am

Registration begins at 9 a.m. March 16 and closes promptly at 10:30 a.m. at the Base Lodge. Competition starts at 11 a.m. and is followed by an awards ceremony at 2 p.m. on the deck of the Base Lodge. Skiers and snowboarders who do not wish to participate in the competition are invited to enjoy some lunch and live music on the Base Lodge deck while cheering on the competitors.

Voces y Visiones at the Nevada Museum of Art

A wide ranging and diverse survey of the stellar art collection from New York's El Museo del Barrio, the leading Latino cultural institution in the U.S. dedicated to Latino, Latin American, and Caribbean art. This lively exhibition presents over fifty objects, including sculpture, painting, prints, photographs, and mixed media installations addressing themes such as identity politics, colonialism, emotional connections to homeland, and contemporary visual culture. Artworks created by living artists are contextualized with a concise selection of ancient Taíno stone carvings.
This exhibition was jointly organized by the El Museo del Barrio and the Nevada Museum of Art.

Arte Italia baseball exhibit noon – 5pm

Italian Americans at Bat: From Sand Lots to the Major Leagues, a documentary exhibition celebrating many of the most memorable names in baseball, will be on display at arte italia Jan. 17 through May 19.

A lasting impact has been made by Italian Americans on the sport, but equally important is the extent to which baseball contributed to the Americanization of Italians. Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Tony Lazzeri, Tommy Lasorda, Joe Torre and Tony LaRussa prevailed over America's favorite past time. Italian Americans at Bat honors their contributions, and those of 450 others who have left an indelible imprint on the game.

Wood Paper Etc, Sierra Arts 1-5pm

An exhibition from renowned Reno artist Walter McNamara will be on display at the Sierra Arts Gallery from March 12 to April 18 with an artist reception on Friday, March 22 from 5-7p.m. This show, entitled Wood. Paper. Etc. A Mixed Media Exhibition, will include sculpture and collage from the artist's private collection.

Sculpturally he divines beautiful and complex forms out of altered driftwood, chains and bone making each material and each shape fight for the viewer's attention. His collage marries a delicate though energetic watercolor technique with pieces of our collective cultural trash including cigarette packs

Leprechaun Crawl starts at the Silver Legacy 7:30pm

What else is going on? Food and drink specials, costume contests with cash and prizes, green beer at a number of stops, popular Irish music and meet the little leprechaun's…that is, if you get a glimpse of them! What's more, a portion of the proceeds is benefitting Future Kind, a non-profit dedicated to improving infrastructure and education and closing the global opportunity gap and building communities.

 

St. Baldrick's at the Livestock Events Center 5-8 pm

The Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) invites the community, schools, businesses, to support the 8th annual northern Nevada St. Baldrick's community celebration. This is a fun, family friendly event with great activities for kids, including face painting and a photo booth. There is also food and drinks for everyone to enjoy while celebrating.

www.stbaldricks.org – and choose the Reno Celebration, create a team (or sign up as an individual), then start collecting pledges. Participants are asked to raise a $100.00 minimum to shave at this event. Bringing family and friends to help cheer on participants at the event is highly encouraged!.

Leprechaun Chase 5K run and walk at the Discovery Museum 8:30am

Are you faster than a leprechaun? Your chance to find out happens Sunday, March 17th at the inaugural Leprechaun Chase through Reno's Midtown District. The race starts and ends at The Discovery!

A portion of the proceeds from the race benefit The Discovery, so gather your family and friends and help make this race a success.

The road closures for the Leprechaun Chase will occur approximately 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The closures will include: Center Street between Holcomb Avenue and Stewart Street; Holcomb Avenue between Liberty Street and Pueblo Street; Stewart Street between Center Street and Wells Avenue; and Wells Avenue southbound between Stewart Street and Pueblo Street. Suggested alternative routes include using Sinclair and Wheeler Avenue. Please note there will be volunteers and Reno Police Officers working the course to allow residential traffic to cross when safe. 

An additional road closure for St Patrick's Day festivities will be Vesta Street between Wells Avenue and Holcomb Avenue. This closure will occur between 9:00 am on March 17 until 12:00 a.m. on March 18.
