Emergency Alerts Coming to Cell Phones Near You

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County Emergency Management Team is starting a statewide project to become more sophisticated on how they issue public warnings and give public information.

We have certainly had our share of disasters here in northern Nevada, from the Reno Air Races crash to the Washoe Drive and Caughlin Fires.

Typically, you and I receive emergency alerts over the radio or television when there's danger, but soon, you will get those alerts on your cell phone.

"We're getting closer and closer to perfecting the technology, but you could receive an alert as early as this summer as the weather center sends out flash flood alerts, for example," said Washoe County Emergency Manager Aaron Kenneston.

Kenneston said you can opt out of the cell phone alerts, just check with your provider. He said he does advise against opting out.

Emergency alerts will be sent to specific cell towers, so the message will be sent to a tower in an area that is threatened.

Alerts will not be sent to every cellphone in the entire western Nevada, eastern region as you see on radio and TV. He said they seldom send out emergency alerts, but when they do it's for an impending hazard and to give you instructions on how to avoid that hazard.

"Also, eventually, issue these alerts over things like not, electric signage over highway and any communities that have siren systems will be integrated into it."

Kenneston said they want to be sure not to cry wolf. He said they will not bombard you with alerts. Messages will only be sent when you really need to be warned.
