BLM Seeks Input on Drought Management Plan

Posted: Updated:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District, has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) for management of public lands and activities within the Carson City District during drought conditions. The public is invited to comment on the EA through April 12, 2013.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of Jan. 1, over 60 percent of the state is in severe or extreme drought conditions. While recent rain and snow events have slightly improved conditions in a few areas, the entire state remains abnormally dry. On Feb. 27, the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated Douglas, Esmeralds and White Pine counties and Carson City, Nevada as primary natural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought. Farmers and ranchers in Elko, Lincoln, Mineral, Storey, Eureka, Lyon, Nye, and Washoe counties also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous with the designated primary natural disaster areas. Farmers and ranchers in Alpine, El Dorado, Inyo, Mono, and Placer counties in California also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous. Additional information is also available online at www.fsa.usda.gov.

The proposed EA analyzes a wide range of temporary drought response alternatives that could be used to mitigate the effects of drought. Input can be submitted via email to CCDODroughtEA@blm.gov, or mailed to BLM, Carson City District, 5665 Morgan Mill Road, Carson City, NV 89701. The EA can be viewed on the BLM Carson City District website at:

http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/carson_city_field/blm_information/nepa/nepa_archives.html.  Printed copies of the document can be obtained by contacting the BLM's Carson City District Office at the address above.

Comments, including names, street addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers of respondents will be available for public review at the Carson City District Office during regular business hours.  Before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or other personal identifying information in your comment, you should be aware that your entire comment - including your personal identifying information - may be made publicly available at any time. While you can ask us in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. All submissions from organizations and businesses, and from individuals identifying themselves as representatives or officials of organizations or businesses, will be available for public inspection in their entirety.

Questions or comments regarding the EA can be addressed to Angelica Rose, Project Manager, at (775) 885-6008.
