A bill to expand required federal background checks for gun purchases is on its way to the U.S. Senate floor.
Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the measure in a vote along party lines.
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley led the Republican opposition saying more background checks will lead to gun registration and confiscation.
But the bill's sponsor, New York's Chuck Schumer insists expanded background checks will decrease crime.
The Senate Committee also approved a measure providing $40-million a year for school safety programs.
