OREM, Utah. – Despite slugging three home runs on the day, the University of Nevada baseball team could not hold a lead and fell to Utah Valley 6-5 on Saturday.

The Wolf Pack (9-6) has now dropped two straight after the loss to the Wolverines (7-7). Nevada notched seven hits on the day, lead by Austin Byler who went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, his fourth of the season. Jamison Rowe was 1-for-5 with two RBI while Hugo Hernandez was 1-for-2 with a home run.

The Wolf Pack held the lead in the eighth but closer Michael Fain could not preserve the win, as Utah Valley scored two runs to take the lead for good.

Nevada opened the scoring in the second with an RBI ground out from Brad Gerig after Byler lead off the inning with his third triple of the year. Utah Valley quickly responded in the bottom of the second when Colby Croft launched a solo shot on the first pitch of the inning.

After a leadoff double in to start the third, the Wolverines pushed two more runs across to make the score 3-1. Nevada answered by scoring in three straight innings to take the lead, started in the fifth when Jamison Rowe hit his first home run of the year to tie the game at three. Byler hit his home run in the sixth, and Hernandez pinch hit for Jones when he hit his home run to extend the Wolf Pack lead to 5-3.

The bullpen couldn't hold the lead, as the Pack gave up a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, leading to a blown save for Fain, his first of the year. Adam Whitt takes the loss and falls to 0-2, while Ryan Evans earned his second win of the year. The finale between Nevada and Utah Valley will happen on Saturday at 11 a.m. PST.
