Plans to build a new dormitory complex at the University of Nevada are moving forward.
On Friday, the Nevada Board of Regents approved a 42-year lease to Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions which will build the $20 million dormitory graduate family student apartment complex on Evans Avenue. At the end of the lease, the university will own the complex.
The new three-story "Graduate Family Student Apartment" complex will replace the current facility, University Village, at 1775 Evans St., just east of the Lombardi Recreation Building. It will triple the amount of housing available to graduate students and their families.
The current building is more than half a century old - and its 40 one-bedroom units are out of date and don't meet the university's population needs.
The old building will be demolished at the end of May. The new building will be finished by July 2014.
The 120 units will provide 212 beds. Some units will be one-bedroom, one-bath, and others will be two-bedroom, two-bath. Each unit will have modern appliances, efficient cooling and heating systems, and washers and dryers – features that were absent in the old building. In addition, there will be a gated, secure courtyard for children's activities.
One-bedroom units will likely rent for $825 per month while the two-bedroom units will rent for $1,126.
