Reno's Biggest Garage Sale Returns Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Savvy shoppers know this particular rummage sale is the big one. Bargains are collected and stored all year. Then, come Saturday, the doors open to 20,000 square feet of…well, rummage. Sale co-chair Kim Bacchus says "We have women's clothing, we have house wares, we have books..." 59-year volunteer Jean Myles added, "Treasures and linens and sports…a lot of sports things like skis." Add to that children's and men's clothing, furniture, toys, tools, house wares, antiques, jewelry, and furs. It is Reno's undisputed largest garage sale, and has been for 62 years now.

At the start, you'll see a line of folks outside the Livestock Events Center hours before the doors open. The Events Center exhibit hall is only supposed to hold 500, so many times shoppers have to wait for someone to leave before you get in. Jean Myles told us, "When they open the gates they just surge in. People jump out of their cars and run to try to be the first in line. It is just really amazing."

The draw is the deal. The bargains are legendary. 29-year volunteer Kim Rinehart told us, "They can get glassware for 10 cents apiece. Plates for 10 cents apiece." Kim Bacchus noted there are "Dollhouses that you can pick up for $10. We've had electronics you can get for $25." The word got out to other states. There's one shopper that Kim sees every year: "She comes down from Washington state to get her clothes for her kids."

And the icing on the cake…all the money goes to nonprofits. We watched as 15 local charities received checks for their share of over $60,000 raised from last year's sale. Some of that money goes for scholarships for nursing students, and that's how the rummage sale started in 1951…back when doctors' wives were very often nurses. Jean Myles told us, "They thought they should support future nurses...give them a chance, give them scholarships. A chance to pursue their career."

The sale will be this Saturday from 8:00am to 4:00pm at the Livestock Events Center Exhibit Hall on Wells Avenue. Parking is free and admission is just $3 for adults, and free for everyone 17 and under.
