South Lake Tahoe Police have identified the victim killed in a DUI-related crash on Friday night.

Police say it happened around 6:45 p.m. They responded to a report of a pedestrian who was hit by a car on the 2600 block of Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

When officers arrived on scene, they found 51-year old South Lake Tahoe Resident John Carleton lying unconscious on the roadway. He was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Police say they talked to the driver of the vehicle, 49-year old Gregory Stearns of South Lake Tahoe. They say he had a suspended driver's license from a prior DUI conviction. He was ultimately arrested for driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Police are looking into reports of the pedestrian possibly crossing Lake Tahoe Boulevard outside of a crosswalk, wearing dark clothing in an unlit portion of the highway and failing to yield to the oncoming traffic.

Police say the pedestrian may also have been intoxicated. He has reportedly had a history with police for public intoxication.
