Pack Softball Falls to Oregon State in 11 Innings

Posted: Updated:

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Erin Jones and Ashley Butera homered but the Nevada softball team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday, losing 6-5 in 11 innings to Oregon State in the Wolf Pack's first game of the Cathedral City Classic.

Karlyn Jones went the distance, pitching 10.2 innings, giving up just three earned runs with four strikeouts and just two walks. She fell to 3-3 on the year and Nevada dropped to 5-6.

With the international tie-breaker rule in place, both teams scored in the eighth inning before scoreless frames in the ninth and 10th innings. In the 11th, Nevada came up empty but Oregon State's Ashley Kutz knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to center.

It was a scoreless game until the fourth, when Oregon State capitalized on a couple of Pack errors to plate three runs against Jones and the Pack.

But the Pack came back in the fifth to take the lead. Chelsea Barilli laid down a bunt single to open things up and Karley Hopkins walked to put two on with nobody out. After Megan Sweet was retired, Erin Jones crushed a three-run home run to left to tie it. It was a stunning at-bat as Jones blasted the 18th pitch out of the park after fouling off 18th pitches.

A batter later, Ashley Butera hit a solo shot to give Nevada the lead.

Oregon State got the run back and tied things up in the sixth with a solo home run.

Nevada will be back in action Saturday against Long Island and Utah, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
