Troubled Nevada Lawmaker Brooks Tries to Buy Gun

Posted: Updated:

Carson City Sheriff's deputies say troubled Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks tried to unsuccessfully buy a rifle in Sparks Thursday night.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says Brooks tried to buy the gun at the Scheels sporting goods store in Sparks around 6pm. Brooks was denied the purchase at the store, but Furlong couldn't confirm why, saying he can only speculate Brooks had to await a 72-hour waiting period.

The Sheriff's Office is the first point of contact when anything legislative-related happens since the legislative building is in Carson City.

Sheriff Furlong says authorities did not detain Brooks, or have any communication with the North Las Vegas Democrat related to the incident.

According to the Associated Press, the Department of Public Safety has started a routine background check to determine if Brooks can buy the rifle - and hopes to have a decision by Tuesday.

Brooks has been arrested twice, given a psychiatric evaluation, been banned from meetings with party colleagues in the Assembly and banished from the Nevada Legislature building.

Last month, Brooks was arrested for allegedly threatening Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. He was also accused of grabbing for an officer's gun during an arrest nearly two weeks ago on suspicion of domestic battery in Las Vegas.
