Acid Reflux, Child Bullying Effects & Drug Errors

A new bracelet-shaped device seems to be providing major relief for people with chronic acid reflux. The device encircles the valve between the esophagus and stomach, keeping the valve closed when someone is not eating or drinking. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine finds it eased symptoms in 92 out of 100 chronic acid reflux suffers and 87% stopped using acid-suppressing medications.

It appears child bullying can affect people long into adulthood. Researchers at Duke University found that bullied children are more likely to have anxiety disorders, depression, and suicidal thoughts as adults. Children who were bullies themselves were also at an increased risk of developing anti-social personality disorders years later.

And - electronic prescriptions helped avoid 17 million drug errors in one year. That's according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. Researchers say ordering prescriptions through computer programs cut down on handwriting mistakes and dosage errors.they say if more hospitals use computer programs, it could avoid 50 million drug errors each year.
