It's safe to say this Place 2 Check out has been visited by just as many tourists as locals. That's because it feeds travelers flying through the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The Mountain House Diner is a Tahoe, apres ski feel diner literally in the heart of Reno. Christian De Araujo is the general manager. "They wanted to bring the look and feel of the area to the Reno-Tahoe airport. Whether you are flying in or out you feel like you are in the area."
And now that Reno's food scene is getting more impressive with every new restaurant, the airport wanted to offer the same quality as other local eateries. Of course they still offer the airport standard fare like cheeseburgers and fries, but some other options are surprisingly tasty and healthy. Take for instance the salmon with barley risotto. The chicken stir fry comes with brown rice. And the chili is made with bison.
Plus, since people fly in here from all over the world, breakfast is offered all day long. "We wanted a place where people say 'I'm going to drive a little bit earlier so I can have that great food at the airport.' Which is surprising to say something like this nowadays but it's happening here."
Of course there's a full bar available any time of day for those who need a little liquid courage to fly. Or a sundae maybe to bribe your younger travelers.
All the food at the Reno-Tahoe airport is under contract with a company called Selective Service Partners. It's a British company in 30 countries and 40 airports in the U.S. And along with making the Mountain House Diner a respectable restaurant in Reno, they will soon be opening a restaurant that overlooks the tarmac, just past the new downstairs security screening set to open in the next few weeks.
