Construction on the long-debated SouthEast connector starts today. The project has been in the works for decades now.
Traffic controls will be in place at Sparks Boulevard and Greg Street so construction crews can get to work.
Starting today, they will work on a brand new bridge that will eventually connect Sparks Boulevard to Veteran's Parkway in south Reno. It's part of a 5.5 mile stretch of road the Regional Transportation Commission wants to get started on.
"It's going to save quite a bit of time because it gives another north-south route for travelers in the area that doesn't currently exist," says RTC Project Manager Garth Oksol.
As far as what you'll see today in terms of traffic controls, RTC says, not many. They will most likely close down just one lane on Greg Street.
The big road closures start next month when construction begins on Sparks Boulevard. Drivers can expect more closures there next month.
If everything goes as planned, RTC expects the project to be completed by early 2016.
