Community Invited to School Safety Forums

Posted: Updated:

As part of an ongoing dialogue with the community about crucial issues facing students in the Washoe County School District (WCSD), the WCSD Board of Trustees and the District are inviting the community to ask questions and learn more about school safety and security policies during a series of public forums. At the five public meetings, Superintendent Pedro Martinez, board members, WCSD Police Chief Mike Mieras, and other school officials will discuss school safety, District safety procedures, and ongoing efforts to keep all schools safe.

"This is an invaluable opportunity to talk with our community and to share information about what we do on a daily basis to protect our students and staff," said Martinez. "This is a critical topic, and it's a concern that all of us share. We are always eager and willing to talk about what happens on our campuses every day—both inside and outside the classroom—and this is an important part of that conversation."

"Student safety is our number one priority," said Mieras. "Officers with the WCSD Police Department are specially trained to deal with emergencies as they arise on campuses and in our buildings, and we are constantly practicing and refining those skills. We take this responsibility seriously, and we look forward to talking with the community about how we carry out those responsibilities."

At the series of five public meetings, trustees and District staff will share information about safety measures currently in place in our schools, including regularly scheduled drills, police patrols, training courses for officers and staff, fencing, single point of entry plans, and the lessons learned from tragedies that have taken place in schools in other parts of the country. Members of the community will then have the opportunity to ask questions about safety policies.
