NHP Training Recruits in Southern Nevada; Wants to Fill 77 Vacancies

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Highway Patrol is training 50 potential recruits in hopes of filling some of the 77 vacant positions in the agency.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/Y6j795) NHP Director Chris Perry chalked the shortfall up to pay that's lower than at other major Nevada law enforcement agencies.

Perry told the state Senate Transportation Committee Monday that entry pay for troopers is 35 to 45% lower than entry pay for Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas police.

Perry says troopers will often move to different agencies as they advance in their career, although he says a drop in local government revenue during the recession has slowed down the poaching.

He says lawmakers could help the problem by reducing the number of unpaid furlough days, and restoring merit pay.
