
The University of Nevada (0-1) baseball team lost its season opener 11-4 to Kansas (1-0) on Friday afternoon at Hohokam Stadium, in Mesa, Ariz. Today. The game was the first of a four-game series at the spring training facility of the Chicago Cubs.
With the game tied at four heading into the bottom of the eighth inning Kansas sent 11 hitters to the plate and seven scored. The Jayhawks scored the seven runs on five hits and the Pack committed one error to the put the game out of reach.
KU scored three times in the bottom of the second inning on three hits to take the early lead. The Pack responded with three runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning to knot the game at three. A pair of newcomers drove in the runs for Nevada, left fielder Brad Gerig doubled in the first two and second baseman Scott Kaplan's RBI single tied the game.
In the top of the sixth inning third baseman Austin Byler singled and eventually scored on a passed ball to put the Pack on top 4-3. The Jayhawks scored in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single by left fielder Michael Suiter and the game was tied once again at four. KU broke open the game with the seven-run eighth inning to win 11-4.
Both starters left after six innings with the game tied and received no decisions. The Pack's Bradey Shipley allowed four runs on five hits and struck out six. KU's Frank Duncan was charged with four runs, three earned and struck out five.
Robert Kahana (1-0) earned the win for the Jayhawks after not allowing a run in his 1.2 innings on the mound. Freshman Adam Whitt (0-1) was tagged with the loss giving up two runs and did not retire a batter in his time on the mound.
Kaplan (2-for-3,RBI) and designated hitter Lance Berringer (2-for-3) led the Pack with two hits each. Gerig drove in two runs and Kaplan one.
Kevin Kuntz (3-for-5,R,2RBI) led KU with three hits while Jordan Dreiling (2-for-3, 2RBI) and Suiter (2-for-3,2R,RBI) each collected two hits. Kuntz, Dreiling and Justin Protacio had two RBI each.Game two of the series is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PT on Saturday.
