Nevada Senate Bill Amends Parole Credits System

Posted: Updated:

A bill before the Nevada Senate is trying to refine the parole credits system and minimum sentence definition within the prison system.

The Senate Committee on the Judiciary is scheduled to take up SB71. Sponsored by Democratic Sen. David Parks of Las Vegas, it is scheduled for discussion Wednesday.

The bill would grant a prisoner with multiple convictions the right to group the minimum sentence of each offense to be served consecutively at the start of the individual's prison term. It also proposes that earned parole credits are only applied toward reducing the prisoner's minimum term, rather than the maximum.

Under the bill, the total number of credits earned could not reduce the prison time by more than 58 percent. (AP)
