It's 2 a.m. and Vanessa Yescas is headed for the Sweet Dreams Academy and 24-7 Daycare on Kietzke Lane in Reno. And boy is she glad they are there for her.
"I am a single mom with three young kids and I work at both the Convention Center and at McDonald's and before Sweet Dreams opened every place closed at like six in the evening and I could never find help. Here, they work out the schedules and are always there when I need them," she says.
And she's not the only one who appreciates the flexibility Sweet Dreams offers.
"We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year if parents need us," says Director Cheryl Moreland. "We have a lot of nurses and firefighters and casino workers and Well Fargo has a call center that's open until two in the morning. We have picks up and drop-offs all day long and all night long."
Moreland taught nursing for 33 years and wanted to create a place where nursing students and working nurses could feel good about leaving their children while they worked long hours. They take drop-ins and if you can tell them a week ahead, they schedule workers in for whenever you need them. And it's a family affair - Cheryl's husband, her sister, her brother and a sister-in-law all work there.
"We see that families are struggling with working long shifts and two and three jobs and decided this is a way we could help. Plus, we all love kids, so it's a fun job to come to every day," she says.
