Manhunt Expands for Former LAPD Officer Accused of Killing 3

Posted: Updated:

Authorities in Southern California say they found tracks around the burned out truck of a fired Los Angeles police officer suspected of three killings, but they did not lead to Christopher Dorner.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said at a news conference Thursday night that 125 law enforcement officers were combing the area around Big Bear Lake for Dorner as a snowstorm approached and a three-state manhunt increasingly centered on the rural mountain community.

McMahon says deputies and officers are searching door-to-door for Dorner in the area where there are many empty vacation homes to hide in. He says the search will continue as long as conditions allow.

Meanwhile, a U.S. Marshals Service official says the search for Dorner has spread from California to Nevada, Arizona and Mexico.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the official was not authorized to comment publicly on the investigation.

Records show Dorner owns a small two-story home in a neighborhood about 9 miles southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.

No one appeared to be inside Thursday.

In San Diego, where Dorner allegedly tied up an elderly man and tried to steal his boat last night, a naval base was locked down today after a Navy worker reported seeing someone resembling Dorner.

LAPD says he was multiple weapons including an assault rifle with him.

LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck says the massive manhunt for Dorner may be the largest in the department's history.

Authorities issued a statewide "officer safety warning" and police were sent to protect people named in the posting that was believed to be written by fired officer Christopher Dorner. Among those mentioned were members of LAPD.

The LAPD has pulled officers from motorcycle duty, out of fear that they would be easy targets.

A manifesto Dorner is believed to have posted online says he wants to wage war on the LAPD.

Freeway information boards in Nevada are posting notes about Dorner's gray 2005 Nissan Titan and license plate number, with instructions for anyone seeing it to call 911.

The search for Dorner, who was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false statements, began after he was linked to a weekend killing in Irvine. One of the victims was the daughter of a former police captain who had represented Dorner during the disciplinary hearing. Authorities believe Dorner opened fire early Thursday on police in area cities, killing a Riverside officer and wounding another.

Thursday afternoon, CNN anchor said he received a package from Dorner that included a note, DVD and a coin with bullet holes.
