First Ever Late Season White Goose Hunt Introduced

Posted: Updated:

For the first time Nevada waterfowl hunters can take advantage of a newly added late season white goose hunt, this hunt includes Snow Goose and Ross's Goose. The season begins Sunday, February 10 and runs through Thursday, February 28, 2013.

Federal regulations have allowed for late season white goose hunts in an effort to relive the burgeoning pressure of these populations on the breeding grounds they are returning to.

"This hunt allows sportsmen to take advantage of these white geese on their return migration trip," said Russell Woolstenhulme, biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife. "Traditionally in Nevada, waterfowl season is already over; we instituted this late season in order to make the most of these federal regulations."

Nevada's Northeast Zone and Northwest Zone for waterfowl hunting will be open for this late season with certain restrictions. The South Zone is closed for this hunt. Complete information is available at www.ndow.org.

"This new season is the perfect time to take advantage of additional waterfowl hunting opportunity, or to try goose hunting for the first time," said Woolstenhulme.

To participate in this hunt, a Nevada State Duck Stamp ($10) is required for any person 12-64 years old who hunts migratory game birds. A Federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Stamp ($16 at NDOW) is required for any person age 16 or older who hunts any migratory waterfowl. Sportsmen who currently hold these stamps and licenses do not need to purchase new ones to participate in this late season. For more information, or to purchase a stamp or hunting license, visit www.ndow.org.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW's wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen's license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. Find us on Facebook, Twitter or visit us at www.ndow.org.
