Sec. of State John Kerry Vows to Protect U.S. Diplomats

Posted: Updated:

As he takes the helm of the State Department, John Kerry is promising to protect U.S. foreign service workers from terrorist attacks overseas.

Kerry was greeted with loud cheers by employees at the State Department as he arrived for his first day at his new office today.

After noting the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in the September attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, Kerry said the protection of American diplomats will be a top priority.

Succeeding women secretaries of state Hillary Rodham Clinton and Condoleezza Rice, Kerry asked in jest: "Can a man actually run the State Department?"

Praising Clinton, he also said, "I have big heels to fill."

Kerry is the son of a diplomat and was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for four years. Greeting State Department staff, he spoke of his childhood time in Germany and learning the virtues of freedom.  (AP)
