WCSD Superintendent Martinez Discusses 'State of Education'

Posted: Updated:

Washoe County Superintendent Pedro Martinez stopped by the studio for an interview on 'Channel 2 News This Morning' on Friday.

Martinez discussed the state supreme court allowing a 2% business tax proposal to be presented in the legislature and that could end up on the ballot in 2014.

"I'm optimistic, cautiously optimistic, that we're going to be talking about investing in education and really for me, our focus is on making sure it's on targeted areas that we need."

Some of those areas were highlighted in Martinez's State of Education address Tuesday night - like full-day kindergarten at all schools and closing achievement gaps.

For Martinez -- his top two initiatives are implementing common core standards for K-12... and focusing on signature academies.

"We already have more than 10% of our incoming 9th graders that are going to science, technology, engineering, mathematics."

Martinez also reiterated his goal of balancing the budget within the next two years.

Right now, there's a $22-million deficit.
