NHP Carjacking Suspects Appear in Court

Posted: Updated:

The 3 surviving suspects involved in a traffic stop that lead to the carjacking of an NHP vehicle near Mustang Tuesday made a court appearance from the Washoe County Jail Thursday morning.

29-year-old Manuel Rodriguez, 23-year-old Christian Magliano and 29-year-old Mollie Bass made their initial court appearance 72 hours after their arrests on Interstate 80.

The trio's bail at Washoe County Jail is set at $150,000 each on drug and conspiracy charges. Troopers say they found more than 100 pounds of marijuana worth almost $500,000 inside the Explorer.

Deputies say the trio, along with 22-year-old Devin Peterson of Jacksonville, Florida, was pulled over near Mustang for a routine traffic violation.  During the stop, Peterson jumped out of the SUV into the patrol car and sped off east down the highway.

Other troopers followed and shot out the patrol car's tires. Once the car became disabled, investigators say Peterson used the trooper's shotgun to carjack another car. After crashing that car, he shot himself in the chest with the trooper's shotgun. He died near Fernley.

Florida Department of Corrections records show Peterson was convicted of a felony gun charge in April 2011 and was sentenced to three years' probation.

The Washoe County District Attorney's Office has until Monday to file formal charges against the trio, after which they will be arraigned in court the following day.

The two Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the on-going investigation. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the Washoe County Sheriff's Office at (775) 328-3320, Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900, http://www.secretwitness.com/, or text the tip to 847411 (TIP 411) keyword - SW.
