Man Who Took Nevada Patrol Cruiser was Florida Felon

Posted: Updated:

A 22-year-old carjacker who stole a Nevada state trooper's cruiser then fatally shot himself in the chest with the patrolman's shotgun was on probation in Florida for carrying a concealed weapon.

Investigators confirmed Wednesday that Devin Peterson of Jacksonville, Fla., appears to have died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound after carjacking a second vehicle and leading police on a chase Monday on Interstate 80 east of Reno.

Florida Department of Corrections records show he was convicted of the felony gun charge in April 2011 and was sentenced to three years' probation.

Peterson fled after he and three other Jacksonville residents were pulled over and state troopers searched their SUV for marijuana. Their bail at the Washoe County Jail is set at $150,000 each on drug and conspiracy charges.

29-year old Manuel Rodriguez and two passengers -- 23-year-old Christian Magliano and 29-year-old Mollie Bass were arrested and charged with numerous drug related charges.

The two Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the on-going investigation.

Pursuant to the Washoe County's OIS Protocol, the OIS investigation will be conducted by a joint investigative team comprised of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, the Reno Police Department, the Sparks Police Department, the Nevada Department of Investigation, and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is the lead agency for this investigation. Additional information will be released as the investigation unfolds.
