Chamber's "Directions 2013" to Focus on Regional Cooperation

Posted: Updated:

There is renewed effort to diversify Nevada's economy and create more jobs in the process. On Thursday, February 7th the Chamber of Commerce will host its annual economic forum at the Grand Sierra Resort. "Directions 2013" will bring hundreds of business leaders together to listen to experts and find out what to expect in the coming year.

The theme for Directions 2013 is educate, innovate and motivate. And community leaders say they plan to shatter the status quo. Chamber director Len Stevens says things have changed in Northern Nevada.

"We're going through a very different time, not only in Northern Nevada but also as a state," said Stevens. "There was a time when we sat back and relied on gaming and relied on construction to pay a lot of the bills and now we're in a situation where we have to look at diversity."

Construction and gaming will always be part of Nevada, but the chamber is working with businesses and the community to find new areas of growth.

This year about a thousand people are expected to attend "Directions 2013." With a legislative session starting next month, there will be plenty to talk about. Stevens says education will be a hot topic.

"One of the things that is at the forefront with our governor is bringing new jobs into our community and in order to do that, we have to have an educated workforce," he said.

Speakers at Directions 2013 will also tackle issues like consolidation of community services, attracting new jobs and how to get everyone in the Reno/Sparks area to work together. The chamber hopes to lead the way.

"We need to be the conduit between what happens in government and what happens in business and that's the chamber's responsibility," said Stevens.

Stevens says we also need to promote the assets we already have. "Sometimes living here, we have sort of a tunnel vision. We don't recognize sometimes all of the resources we do have. Not just the beauty of living up here in northern Nevada, but the resources like Desert Research Institute, like the university, like TMCC," he said

Directions 2013 takes place next Thursday at the Grand Sierra Resort. It's open to the public but there is an entry fee. Visit thechambernv.org for details.
