Nevada Football Finalizes 2013 Non-Conference Schedule

Posted: Updated:

The University of Nevada football team will play host to BYU at Mackay Stadium this fall as part of changes to the 2013 Wolf Pack football schedule, athletics director Cary Groth announced today.

Nevada will open the season at UCLA on Aug. 31 before coming home for the Mackay Stadium opener against UC Davis on Sept. 14. Nevada will travel to play Florida State on Sept. 21 with the home game against BYU scheduled for Nov. 30.

As part of the move to bring BYU to Reno this year, Nevada's previously scheduled game with Oregon, which was to have been played Sept. 7, has been moved to 2019 and will be in Eugene, Ore. The Sept. 7 date could be filled by a Mountain West game or could be an open weekend.

The changes were made to alleviate a schedule in which Nevada was to play three likely Top-25 teams in a four-week stretch.

"We needed to make some changes to help balance our schedule and prepare our team to be successful within the Mountain West," Groth said. "Playing UCLA is a good game for us for a number of reasons, including our recruiting efforts in California. We exhausted all possibilities to address the Florida State game and could not come up with a mutually acceptable resolution. At that point, moving the Oregon game was our best option."

Groth said that first-year Wolf Pack coach Brian Polian was consulted about the moves made by the athletics administration.

Nevada's pact with BYU calls for a total of three games between the teams, with the final two in Provo in later years. This year's game will be played on Nov. 30 at Mackay Stadium with future games in 2014 and 2019.

Nevada and BYU have met three times since 1940 with BYU winning in Provo in 2001 and Nevada taking victories over the Cougars in 2002 in Reno and again in 2010 in Provo. Overall, the Cougars have a 4-2-2 advantage in the all-time series.

Due to recent conference membership changes, the Mountain West portion of the schedule is expected to be announced in April.

Season tickets for the 2013 season start at just $90 and are available now by calling 775-348-PACK or visiting NevadaWolfPack.com
