Washoe County Starts Free One-Year Pet Microchipping Campaign

Posted: Updated:

Washoe County Regional Animal Services is about to begin an unprecedented one-year campaign to provide free micochips to Washoe County pet owners.

Members of the Sheridan Family from Cold Springs, including nine-year-old Carlie Sheridan whose cat Splash was returned after it was missing for over a year thanks to a microchip, will join Regional Animal Services Director Barry Brode to discuss the importance of microchipping all pets, even pets that pet owners think will never leave home.

"Matika," a 10-year-old Australian Shepherd and recipient of the campaign's first free microchip, will also attend a Monday press briefing to help demonstrate how easy it is for Animal Services field personnel to scan and return microchipped pets.

Brode said the goal of this year-long campaign is to help reunite lost pets with their owners as efficiently as possible while reducing the overall cost of running Regional Animal Services through decreased intake, housing and animal care costs.
