Carson City Sheriff's Office Investigate Road Rage Incident

Posted: Updated:

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating a road rage incident that happened Saturday night.

Sheriff Ken Furlong says an engaged couple was driving westbound on Highway 50, near East Lompa Lane, when they noticed a car tailgating them around 9:30 p.m. When they exited onto the I-580 bypass headed to College Parkway, they found the vehicle continued to tailgate them closely.

Sheriff Furlong says after exiting the freeway, the couple drove to the woman's mother's home on the 3500 block of Cinnabar Avenue. When she pulled into the driveway, she got out of the car, and then the suspect, identified as 27-year old Leonardo Cardoza, ran his van into her and pinned her up against the home. Cardoza then drove away and crashed his vehicle in a backyard, a few houses away.

Sheriff Furlong says Cardoza then returned on foot to the Cinnabar area where he was confronted by residents.

Cardoza was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center for treatment and was released to police custody early Sunday morning. He is charged with battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident causing injury and DUI.

The unidentified victim was also taken to Renown with serious injuries, including broken bones and internal injuries.

Deputies are still investigating and trying to find a motive for this incident. They are still looking into how Cardoza and woman are related.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Carson City Sheriff's Office Detectives Division at (775) 887-2500.
