Almost 100,000 Christmas Trees Recycled Locally

Posted: Updated:

Reno, NV (Jan. 23, 2013) — For the 22nd year, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful organized Christmas Tree Recycling in Washoe County, where 330 volunteers braved snow, ice and below-freezing temperatures to help residents recycle almost 10,000 trees, which were chipped into mulch for use in area parks.

"We are excited to see this program grow every year," said Christi Cakiroglu, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) executive director. "People had a lot of obstacles weather-wise to recycling this year, but they still showed up to keep their trees out of the landfill."

For the second year, NV Energy matched all donations to Christmas Tree Recycling up to $10,000, and thanks to generous recyclers, the match was met. All money left after covering expenses for the program will be used to rent dumpsters and buy supplies to clean up illegal dump sites during KTMB's Great Community Cleanup on May 11, 2013.

Residents who still have trees can take them to R.T. Donovan Company for composting, or cut them into small pieces for placement in their trash receptacles. Whole trees are not picked up curbside, but can be taken to the Lockwood Landfill.
