Super Bowl Bound, Kaepernick Merchandise Flies Off Shelves

Posted: Updated:

Keeping up with Colin Kaepernick merchandise is proving a challenge for local sporting goods stores. In fact, since former UNR quarterback Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC championship on Sunday, lines have been out the door at Silver and Blue Outfitters in Meadowood Mall.

"We're down to specific sizes in the official NFL jerseys," said Shane Stuart at Silver and Blue Outfitters. "We're ordering more as fast as we can. But everything with his name and his number is selling fast!"

The story was much at Scheels at Legends in Sparks. While stock seemed high on Monday morning, officials there say they are receiving a new shipment of merchandise tonight and will have it on the floor there Tuesday morning.

"We're buying shirts for family and friends and for a big tailgate party," said Peggy Coons of Reno," who was shopping at Scheels today.

And at the Silver and Blue, there was a steady stream of customers.

"I'm getting shirts for my wife," said Bart Vandamme of Reno. "She's out of town and I told her to look for the Sports Illustrated issue with Kaepernick on it at the airport because they are all out of them here."

He's right about that. Barnes and Noble reports it ran out of issues about 15 minutes after it went on sale last Friday. Stuart with Silver and Blue says he bought all he could in San Francisco over the weekend and brought them back and sold out of them with about 20 minutes of opening the store.

"Then we drove down to Sacramento and bought about 90 from the bookstores and airport and the Wal-Marts and they're done too! We're trying to deal directly with Sports Illustrated just to get more copies up here," he said.

"It's just so exciting to see our local boy on his way to the Super Bowl," said Janet Volock at Silver and Blue today. "It's really, really exciting!"

And you can bet that excitement will grow for the next two weeks.

CBS Sports will provide hours ofcoverage from New Orleans on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3rd.

You can watch it only on Channel 2, starting at 8 am. Kick-off for the big game is set for 3:30pm, local time.
