Freight Train Derailed in Colfax

Posted: Updated:

Authorities from multiple agencies are investigating after a freight train derailed in the downtown Colfax, California area Sunday morning.

An official with CAL Fire tells Channel 2 News that the derailment happened near the train depot on Railroad Street around 11 a.m. No one was injured.

The official said one of the cars leaked fluid. Nearby homes were evacuated to the nearby Colfax High School as a precaution so that a hazmat team could test the fluid on scene. The official said the fluid was later found to not be dangerous. The evacuation order was lifted around 3 p.m.

Amtrak tells Channel 2 News that the derailment delayed two of its trains. One of the stopped trains went east from Emeryville, California to Chicago. Officials say passengers on that train waited awhile until authorities gave the conductor permission to continue traveling.

Meanwhile, passengers in another Amtrak train that went west into Emeryville from Chicago were taken off the train and were given a bus ride to their final destination.
