A Sparks man faces several charges after leading NHP and CHP officers on a chase through Reno, Sparks and eastern California.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers say they tried to stop 21-year-old Kody Strong Tuesday night around 10:45pm on east I-80 near the Virginia Street interchange for a traffic violation. But, they say Strong, driving a stolen Toyota sedan, failed to yield – and sped on eastward.
They say Strong then exited the freeway at Pyramid Way and led troopers on a brief chase on Pyramid, Oddie Blvd., 21st Street, H Street and Prater Way in Sparks before again getting on I-80 west.
Strong again briefly got off I-80 near Verdi, and then got back on the roadway eastbound heading back towards Reno. He then got off I-80 near Keystone, and turned around westward into California.
NHP officers say they tried several times to stop the car with road spikes, but were unable to safely terminate the chase. They say one driver near Robb Drive accidentally drove over the spikes and had to be later helped by a tow truck.
CHP officers finally successfully ‘spiked' the Toyota near Farad around 11pm. Despite having two deflated tires, the Toyota continued on until it stopped near the Floriston interchange.
Strong was later booked into the Nevada County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility on violations committed in California.
As for criminal charges in Nevada related to the incident, NHP says a warrant for numerous traffic-related and felony eluding charges will be completed and submitted by NHP to the Washoe County District Attorney's Office for review.
