New Addition Planned for Midtown Area

Posted: Updated:

Reno's Midtown area has certainly seen its share of changes in the last few years.

The revitalization effort is renewed, with hopes of adding an outdoor urban farm to the mix on Center Street.

Lyndsey Langsdale and her partner Toni Ortega were a couple of art majors at the University of Nevada, but these artists are turning into farmers.

"Talking about having food and getting fresh produce to neighbors and to kids is really, everybody can get on board with that," says Langsdale.

The plan is to take a piece of land a little smaller than one acre, and turn it into Lost City Farm.

"We're going to have a farm stand right in the center of the property so anybody, when we're open, can come, any neighbor, anybody at all, can come and buy the produce right from us," says Langsdale.

She says in Nevada, growers need a certification to sell food that has not been processed. She hopes to distribute her food to local restaurants and stores.

"We want to be able to deliver all of our produce by bike," she says. "So, the goal is to sell everything that is sellable within about five miles."

She says she and her partner will grow vegetables that customers request.

"So, we'll have herbs, we'll have mostly root crops and greens."

Other local farmers have been helping them with seed starts and setting up the irrigation system. An empty lot now, that should be sprouting up in the near future.

"This is something that can happen in town that can benefit anybody who wants to take part in it," says Lyndsey.

Lyndsey and her partner are still raising money through fundraisers to pay for the farm. They plan on planting in Spring, and will be open to the public by June.
