Gov. Sandoval Outlines Priorities in State of the State Address

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Brian Sandoval came into office bullish on a state racked by unemployment, bankruptcies and foreclosures.

Tonight the first term Republican will report to lawmakers and Nevadans on their return on investment from his policies and outline his priorities for the 2013 legislative session.

Sandoval is approaching the session that begins February 4th from a more centrist vantage point than the conservative-talking candidate who became the state's first Hispanic governor after the 2010 election.

His televised speech to lawmakers will also serve as a de facto opening statement for his 2014 re-election campaign.

During his first term Sandoval stressed economic development, job creation and education reform as priorities for his administration. Those areas will again be front and center in the months to come.

People we talked with say jobs are exactly what they want to hear about. "Employment's a big one. I've been out of work for a year-and-a-half, and especially for Fernley, there's nothing out there. It's really a hard thing to make ends meet," says Robin Kennedy.

The Governor's Office says he'll lay out what he thinks is the best path for improving education. Nevada's current two-year budget is $6.2 billion - more than half of that is used to fund education. "I can't say the schools are underfunded. I think it's a matter of management, the way schools are top-loaded with administrators," says Ed Andrews of Winnemucca.

Sherilyn Ostrander of Yerington adds, "I was just seeing where they were talking about how the schools need to be repaired. Where are they going to come up with that? They can barely come up with the money for books and supplies."

Gov. Sandoval will also talk about balancing the budget and prioritizing state spending. "The bottom line is that we do have a lot to do in Reno and Nevada. To do that, one has to pay. So, who is going to pay? Nevadans?" asked Charles Tshimanga of Reno.

We'll carry his speech live right here on Channel 2 - starting at 6pm followed by the Democratic response by State Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis.

Because of the State of the State address we won't air the CBS Evening News tonight. But you can still see it on Channel 2-2 and Charter 222.

Also, we will air CBS News coverage of President Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday, February 12th from 6:00-7:30pm.
