According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) latest FluView report, influenza activity continues to increase, with most of the country experiencing high levels of influenza-]like activity. The Nevada State Health Division reports 22 confirmed cases of Influenza since the season began. The number of confirmed cases in Nevada is up 57% from only two weeks ago, and numbers continue to increase. Immunize Nevada is encouraging people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

"We want people to know it's still not too late to get vaccinated but the clock is ticking and there is more of an urgency to get a vaccine right away in order to protect yourself," said Heidi Parker, executive director of Immunize Nevada. "The vaccine takes about two weeks to protect against prevalent flu strains, and the flu season will continue for the next few months. Vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself and everyone around you from the flu."

As part of its flu vaccine campaign this year, Immunize Nevada has launched the "Give Us Your Best Shot" Facebook photo contest. Participants of the contest are invited to capture a photo of themselves, their family, friends or coworkers getting a flu vaccine. Then they can go to Facebook.com/ImmunizeNevada and submit the photo in one of six categories: family, teens, seniors, pregnant, best Nevada sports fan, and best Nevada workplace. One submission from each category will be randomly selected and awarded a $150 Visa gift card. Immunize Nevada will be accepting submissions until Jan. 31, but flu season is expected to continue into the coming months.

"The 2012-]2013 flu season is off to an early start across the country. This contest is a fun way to incentivize those who have put off getting their vaccine," adds Parker.

Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications. Flu viruses are constantly changing, and each season, different flu viruses spread and affect people differently based on their body's ability to fight infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a three-]step approach to fighting flu: vaccination, everyday preventative actions and the correct use of antiviral drugs your doctor recommends. There are numerous places to get low-]cost or free flu shots. Nevadans can visit InfluenceNevada.org to view a full list of clinics in their area.
