NV Energy Celebrates Safety Record

Posted: Updated:

NV Energy is celebrating a big milestone at its Fort Churchill generating station: it now has the longest standing safety record in the country.

The plant at Fort Churchill has now gone 25 years without a lost-time accident, which is the longest record for any fossil-fueled plant in the nation. Power plants like these are extremely dangerous places to work, with high temperatures, high pressures, and high voltage electricity.

"We actually make superheated steam," NV Energy Northwest Regional Plant Director Wade Barcellos said. "It is one of the many dangers we face here. The danger of superheated steam is that you can't see it."

Employees at the Churchill station, outside Yerington, take that superheated steam and run it through the turbine, generating 226 megawatts of electricity that feed directly into the power grid.

There are 30 employees working at Fort Churchill, and they said the key to staying safe in this high-risk environment is looking out for each other.

"The culture has always been safety oriented here," Churchill control room operator Paul Roberts said, "so when you start here, you just buy into it."

"This team is awesome," Barcellos said. "They're well-trained; they're highly skilled, and they understand the importance of safety in their day-to-day work."

The Churchill station produces enough electricity to power about 135,000 Nevada households.
