Another Reno Bookstore Closing its Doors

Posted: Updated:

The way things are going, the long-familiar scene of aisle after aisle stacked with books will become a memory. Another Reno bookstore is closing its doors. Zephyr Books co-owner Lee Johnson told us, "We plan to close the store about the first of June." What are they going to go with all their books? "Well, we'll try to sell most of them."

That's a tall order. Lee says they have about 100,000 books in the store, he's not sure exactly how many. Sadly, all that leather and paper is falling out of favor. Today, one-fourth of all book readers, use e-books. Lee never will. "I have not even tried an e-reader. I don't like reading on the screen. I only read on the computer screen when I have to."

For customer Jane Henneberg too, there's something about a printed, bound book that many like her are not eager to let go of. As she walked the aisles of the bookstore she told us, "This is going to be an icon that's gone, an icon for Reno. Look at the history, look at the books!"

But the sad fact for many is, if you still read an actual book, you're doing something increasingly rare these days. In Reno, gone are the Little Professor, Borders and the Bold Print. The digital bugaboo is hitting bookstores all over the country. Johnson told us, "There are a lot more bookstores going out of business around the country than going into business."

The shift from Gutenburg's printing press invention has been swift. The Kindle was introduced only 5 years ago. With no manufacturing, shipping, and storage to pay for, publishers love e-books, but stores are left out in the cold. Lee calls the bookstore a dying business, but he has no hard feelings. As he put it, "We loved the business. Just time to spend a few less hours at it."

But for customer Claus Henneberg, that digital revolution will go on without him. He'll stick with the real thing. "To come into a bookstore, the history that's associated with it, I'm going to miss it."

Lee says Zephyr Books will close on June 1st. The store is discounting books to clear the aisles until then and they're selling their most collectible books online. For more on that, click the link below:
