Judge Blocks Expansion of Lake Tahoe Ski Resort

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge in Sacramento has temporarily blocked the planned expansion of a 50-year-old ski resort on Lake Tahoe's west shore.

In a ruling issued late Friday, U.S. District Judge William Shubb said that regional planners did not adequately consider a smaller and therefore less environmentally intrusive overhaul of the Homewood Mountain Resort before they approved the project.

Shubb ordered the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Placer County to go back and reevaluate whether a scaled-back makeover would be economically feasible for the resort's owners.

JMA Ventures and Homewood Village Resorts had hoped to turn Homewood from a day ski area into an overnight destination by adding a four-story hotel, condominiums, townhouses, ski-in chalets and more retail shops.

Shubbs' ruling came in a lawsuit brought by environmental groups.  (AP)
