Gas Prices Staying Down as 2013 Starts

Posted: Updated:

U.S. drivers are hoping 2013 doesn't start off like 2012 at the gas pump. So far, so good.

Gasoline now averages $3.30 a gallon, up about half a penny since Jan. 1. A year ago, gas rose about 10 cents in the first week or so because of a jump in oil prices. Gas nearly hit $4 in early April.

Oil prices should dictate what happens next with pump prices. The economic drivers for oil are mixed -- economies in the U.S. and China are showing modest improvement, while Europe remains in recession.

The wild card is the Middle East. In the past two years, threats to shipments of oil from the region drove crude prices higher during the winter. That led to a surge in pump prices by spring.  (AP)

Average retail gasoline prices in Nevada have fallen 1.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.15/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,130 gas outlets in Nevada. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $3.26/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Nevada during the past week, prices yesterday were 26.0 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 25.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

The national average has decreased 9.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 6.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. "With the fresh start of 2013 many motorists have begun seeking information on where gasoline prices will be going for the upcoming year," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "GasBuddy will be releasing its 2013 forecast this week, available on the GasBuddy Blog, which will highlight not only where we expect gasoline prices to go, but new this year is our diesel forecast, just more tools to help motorists budget and be prepared for what lies ahead," DeHaan said. The GasBuddy blog can be found at http://blog.gasbuddy.com.
