Train Derails West of Winnemucca, No Injuries

Posted: Updated:

WINNEMUCCA, Nev. (AP) -- Twenty cars of a Union Pacific train hauling grain derailed Saturday afternoon in the northern Nevada desert, but no injuries were reported.

Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt told the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://on.rgj.com/Z9kAKY ) that the derailment occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near Sulfur, about 50 miles west of Winnemucca.

He says the 105-car train was headed to Roseville, Calif., but its origin and the company it was hauling grain for were not immediately known.

Hunt says train traffic was being rerouted on another line through Nevada, and no trains were being held up because of the derailment.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
