School Expands Foreign Language Program

Posted: Updated:

Students in Washoe County have a new opportunity to learn foreign languages, starting as early as age five.

Mount Rose Elementary School is adding some new programs and expanding, in order to become a foreign language academy. Students there are taking classes in Spanish, French, or Mandarin Chinese, starting in kindergarten. Administrators say the earlier they start teaching them, the faster they pick it up.

"Research shows that age five is the best year to start," Mount Rose Principal Krissy Brown said. "Their brains are like little sponges, and they really have picked up everything quickly."

Brown said they chose those languages because of their prevalence around the world. The school started the program in the fall, and it is already so popular that they are expanding to add seventh and eighth grades as well, to become the first K-8 school in Washoe County. And they're getting a new name. The school will be called the Mount Rose K-8 Exemplary School of Languages.

The school is taking applications for next year's seventh grade class, as well as variances for K-6th graders who are currently zoned for other schools.

There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, January 10 at 6 PM at Mount Rose Elementary for parents interested in applying. Or for more information, click here.
