The 2012 Run for Education, held on Oct. 21 at Legends at Sparks Marina, attracted a record 3,899 runners, the largest number of participants since the event began in 2005. The event raised $106,464.44 for Washoe County School District (WCSD), bringing the seven-year total to $1.12 million donated to WCSD for physical and academic fitness.
The Run for Education included a 5K run, 5K walk, and half-mile kid's Fun Run. The top male and female runners were awarded cash prizes. WCSD elementary schools with at least 20 student participants received a Kids in Motion (KIM) grant in the amount of $1,126.53. In 2012, 46 elementary schools qualified for the KIM grant, the highest number of qualifying schools in the event's history. In addition, a portion of the proceeds was awarded to the Washoe K-12 Education Foundation to support Envision WCSD 2015 – Investing In Our Future, the strategic plan that guides the District's work with students.
The top three elementary schools and the middle school with the highest number of participants received additional award money. Rita Cannon Elementary School received $2,000 for first place; Van Gorder Elementary School received $1,500 for second place; Bud Beasley Elementary School received $1,000 for third place; and Shaw Middle School received $500 for first place for a middle school.
After the runs, nearly 8,000 students and families enjoyed the expo area that included a bike rodeo, climbing wall, bounce houses, a fire engine, golf, gold panning, basketball, a live band, and refreshments. All students received swag bags that included a t-shirt, medal, coupons, and special incentives from our sponsors.
