Local Law Enforcement Steps Up Patrols For New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

Local law enforcement is reminding everyone to celebrate the new year safely.

The Nevada Highway Patrol tells Channel 2 News that they are running at full staff Monday and into Tuesday to make sure the roads stay safe. Their message to all of us is to have fun, but just don't drink and drive.

"We want folks to do the right thing, plan their evening safely and responsibly" said Trooper Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol. "Pre-designate that safe and sober driver, not the person in the group who has consumed the least amount of alcohol."

Trooper Allen says New Year's Eve is always one of the busiest nights of the year for the Nevada Highway Patrol with people going from party to party. So, they eliminated days off Monday and Tuesday for all their troopers.

He says if you plan on drinking, you need to designate a sober driver who will not drink at all that night. But, the best thing you can do is to not travel at all.

"The safest thing you can do is stay home or stay at your favorite recreational place, a casino, hotel property," Trooper Allen said. "That's probably the safest thing you can do whenever you can minimize getting out on the highway on those high-partying nights."

If you see a drunk driver, troopers are asking you to report it by calling (775) 687-0400.
