Firefighters are working on a structure fire in south Reno Monday afternoon.

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District say it happened around 1 p.m. at a home on Thunderbolt Drive, north of Arrowcreek Parkway.

"Up the hill, we looked down and saw a large, black plume of smoke," said Jeremy Joseph, a witness. "We thought it was so large and intense, we thought it was actually a commercial building."

Officials say when crews arrived on scene, they found a heavy fire showing from the back of the home.

"Firefighters made entry and supressed as much fire as they could, but they were forced to back out due to the amount of potential for structural collapse," said Chief Charles Moore with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. "And, we transitioned into an offensive attack."

The fire caused extensive damage to the home. A lot of its windows and doors were blown out. Chief Moore says the cause is now under investigation.

He says no one was hurt, but they are still looking for pets who may have been in the house during the fire.

"I have spoken to the owner and we're unable to locate pets at the present," Chief Moore said. "There's a possibility that they escaped or they're still in the house."
