Management Plan For 10 NV Wilderness Areas OK'd

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Federal land managers have completed a management plan for 10 wilderness areas around northwestern Nevada's sprawling Black Rock Desert.

Bureau of Land Management wilderness specialist Kristine Struck says public meetings on the plan drew few people because there was nothing controversial about it.

She says Congress made the tough decisions before enacting legislation designating the wilderness areas in 2000, and they'll continue to be managed with no major changes under the new plan.

Continued management actions will include reclamation of closed routes, noxious weed control and wildfire rehabilitation.

The wilderness areas were established by the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area Act of 2000.

The legislation created an 800,000-acre NCA and 750,000 acres as wilderness. Some 380,000 acres of wilderness are within the NCA.
