NHP Takes to Social Media for Alerts

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Highway Patrol is taking to social media to alert travelers and residents about traffic problems and emergencies.

Just don't check for alerts on your phone if you're behind the wheel. That's against the law.

But the NHP on Friday announced it is implementing an alert system using Facebook, Twitter and Nixle -- a social media tool for public service entities.

Public Safety Director Chris Perry says NHP's use of text alerts shouldn't be perceived as an invitation to break the law by texting or talking on a hands-held cellphone while driving.

Perry says people should use common sense and abide by the law when accessing their cellphone or multimedia devices.
