Vigils Held in Carson City for Shooting Victims

Posted: Updated:

The horrific details of Friday's shooting in Newtown, Connecticut are hitting close to home for people across the country. That includes people here in Northern Nevada, where folks are dealing with the tragedy.

Outside the State Capital Building in Carson City, a few dozen people braved the cold weather on Saturday. They all say the shooting was too devastating to ignore.

"Spend a lot of time just sobbing," says Rory Hogen. "We thought we could come out and at least say some prayers."

A group called Fighters Against Child Abuse held the prayer vigil. They say this is their way to show support for families who lost their children and loved ones.

"Show them that here in Carson City where we're based out of, that we care about what happened in their community," says Joey Primak. "We're sending love and support."

Community members told explain how sad this shooting was, knowing it could happen in any town around the country.

"I also have a granddaughter that's seven," says Angie Coleman, who is an elementary school teacher. "And I'm just really sad, it's really sad."

After the prayer vigil, another group took its place. Community members and business owners held a candlelight vigil and created a card for people to sign which will be sent to Newtown.

They hope the vigil will inspire other communities to help out those families who have lost so much.

"Whether we know them or not, it's a good thing to do," says Lisa Tucker. "To show community support. Whatever we can do."

The owners of Remedy's Bar put the candlelight vigil together. They were also collecting donations which will go directly to the Newtown Public School District.
